It’s no surprise when someone describes your music taste from your personality or your personality from your music taste. Though this can never be spot on but it’s a starting point on guessing who someone is. Personally I have had multiple shifts in the genres of music I listen too, and I don’t think I am anywhere near stopping this behaviour.
I can actually come forward and say every single music genre I’ve listened to literally has a piece of me and what I listen to more has an even bigger piece of my personality to it. I mean I am the kind of person who listens to rap, afro ,lofi, indie, soul and rnb. That’s enjoyable to make me thirty people at once, just imagining moving from Eminem to meek mill then out of no where your on teddy swims.
At some point we are what we listen to and we can’t deny that. Take a look at this imagine you’re in a camp and your fed propaganda(music) on a daily basis and you get to be pointless where you can recite what you’re taught(Lyrics). Even if the cause of the propaganda is good or bad, you’ll definitely shift towards it and build your character and life perspective around it. That’s why when you compare personalities with music preferences they tend to align in a way.
Could I say some of us have thousands of personalities because we listen to multiple music genres? Well the answer in my opinion is no. This is because we mainly listen to music based on how we are feeling at that particular moment. So don’t worry about the multiple genres you listen to. In case that were to be the case then I’d have more than 10 personalities baked into me.
Music for some of us is more than just a beat and voice in the background, some of us are centred around it and find it awkward when we don’t listen to it. It’s our rhythm of life and it’s baked into our souls, it gets to a point where you generally have appreciation for the culture that you start listening to songs in languages you’ve probably never heard of. I don’t know how many of you out there watched the movie sinners starring Michael B Jordan, but Miles Caton’s voice is exceptional in that movie and I don’t even listen to country music. It left me replaying some parts of the movie all over again instead of just looking for his music online.
Obsession is the right word for something like this and at least we can say it has benefits; Music reduces depression, Stress management, music helps you sleep better, Music improves memory,Improve sleep, and there are probably a thousand more.
So when you find me out there with my ears plugged in, just remind me not to get hot by a car.
