Grooming for the average 4C male.

This article is specifically for the people with African descent but in case you want to come experience a day in a life with what we all go through then you’re more than welcome. Grooming can particularly be difficult  for some people and also easy for others. When I talk about grooming, I specifically mean keeping yourself hygienic. What you’ll definitely have in mind now is hair, skin and nails. Though your approach to grooming is also up to you, some people tend to focus more on the areas that they are lacking more on while others tend to have a balanced approach. They do it all body round without focusing  more on one particular part.

Skin

For skin there is the down right basic approach to it and it’s as simple as taking a bath. The frequency depends on your level of comfortability with dirt but personally the least times I’d take a shower is twice a day, and this is all after me doing anything that I feel is physical because I don’t want to have sweat all over my skin. At times it’s even more than twice a day and I’ve read something online that talks about the disadvantage of showering too much but at some point I feel like it’s just a way for people to justify not being clean.

Apart from showering you now have the crazy skin care routine consisting of a cleanser, brightening serums, hydrating moisturizers, and broad-spectrum sunscreen. Now I do not know how much all of this is supposed to help because I’ve never tried it and I can’t even say I do have impressive skin. It’s something that I know definitely pays off cause who wouldn’t want to have clear skin, there’s clearly no one who wouldn’t want that. I can’t recommend a particular set of products but there are many guides that can tell you how to take care of your skin based on your skin colour and tone.

Hair

This can either be the hardest part or the simplest for a black male. If you have short hair then it’s so easy because you mainly just need a moisturizer and a brush for your hair. The magic about short hair is that you can actually not apply anything to it but still have it look good, but you have to brush it at least. Then you can also opt for the harder option and that’s growing your hair out. For months on end, you’ll barely like the way your hair looks because of the shrinkage. Am at that point at the moment and you’ll genuinely have long hair but it looks stunted because of the shrinkage. I advise you to wash your hair though not as frequently, oil it and moisturize it depending on how your hair reacts to the products. You can choose to stretch it out by having braids or blow drying it but I wouldn’t recommend doing this a lot, heat isn’t so beneficial and tends to deform hair strands leading to breakage.

There are also spots on your body you wouldn’t want to ignore, focus on your under arms and your groin areas. This is very crucial for hygiene because a lot of hair in these specific areas makes them more difficult to clean. In case you have an issue with traditional blade shavers, try out trimmers because they may be a little easier on your skin and avoid cuts where you wouldn’t want them.

Nails

I hope you aren’t ignoring your nails and letting them grow out and have dirt under them. If you want them fairly long at least have them clean, It’s very hygienic and on top of that just looks good. Fun fact is that tie nails tend to grow slower so you won’t have to clip them for a longer while than you would for your finger nails.
